FACTS ABOUT THE BILL OF RIGHTS
- The Bill of Rights contains the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution
- It was created three years after the Constitution was ratified in 1788
- It guarantee personal liberties, including the freedom of speech, press, assembly and religion, and protection against 'cruel and unusual punishments'
- Originally the Bill of Rights only applied to land-owning white men
- Blacks were not included until 1868 - 130 years later
- Women were not included until they could vote in 1920. Native Americans were included in 1924
- Only 14 copies were made – one for each of the 13 original colonies and one for Congress
