Paul Ryan was embraced by Republicans as the star of a new political generation in as he delivered an electrifying speech mocking Barack Obama’s presidency as ‘like a ship trying to sail on yesterday’s wind’.
The Republican vice-presidential nominee, at just 42 some 23 years junior to his running mate Mitt Romney, mixed humour and political red meat with a clear exposition of his conservative philosophy and a series of promises.
‘We will not duck the tough issues, we will lead,’ he said as his speech reached its crescendo. ‘We will not spend four years blaming others, we will take responsibility.
