It is clear that governments all over the world think that social media sites are a threat to their governmental control over civil unrest and protesters organizing to demonstrate on the actions they dislike.
Iran has cut off access to the Internet, leaving millions of people without access to email and social networks. Proxy servers and VPN connections have been used to keep the flow of information despite the government’s attempt to control their public. This happened in conjunction with the latest unrest in the country and the governments want to defuse any coming resistance.
Russians have used Facebook and Twitter to organize an unprecedented protest against Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party. Twitter accounts have been created with the sole purpose of drowning out opposition voices by flooding the service’s hashtag search function.
